Valapattanam is small town located 7 km from kannur district of north Kerala. Valapattanam is located on the banks of Valapattanam River. Valapattanam is known for its communal harmony where one can see "Kalarivathukkal temple" and on the other hand you have the "Kakkulangara Mosque" lying in close vicinity. The long visions of the social leaders and people have made Valapattanam a land of communal harmony.
Valapattanam is also known as Balyapattanam and has got the largest wood-based industry in South East Asia, King Solomon's ships anchored to collect timber to build the "Temple of the Lord." It is a captivating experience to watch the conventional mode of timber transportation, by tying long pieces of wood together and allowing them to drift along the stream.
The largest wood-based industry, Western India Plywood Ltd, is based in Valapattanam. The timber industries in have got rich forest resources like Teak, Iruli, Elavu, Karimurukku, Sandalwood etc., along with, the cash crops like tea, coffee, rubber, tobacco, cashew nuts etc.
Pukayila (tobacco) farming is carried on successfully and this is the only place in Kerala where tobacco is cultivated.
Valapattanam is not only famous fishing harbour but also the main source of the irrigation development in the town.
The other tourist attractions are "Muthappan Temple" which lies on the banks of Valapattanam River, about 6 kms from Valapattanam town.
The Azhikhal Beach and its port, with blossoming green groves and golden sands are some of the major tourist attractions.
The best time to visit Valapattanam and its beaches are from October to March.
Some excellent accommodation facilities are available in Valapattanam and kannur, beach resorts, and also some good home stays are also available.
How to get there:
Nearest Airport: Kozhikode is the nearest Airport, which is about 100 km from Kannur and around 93 km from Valapattanam. The Mangalore Airport is also close to the city.
Nearest Railhead: The nearest railway station is in kannur, which is about 7 km.
By Road: Valapattanam is well connected by road network. One can also take a drive from Mangalore, which is about 155 km.
