The salubrious hill station of Ponmudi is located at a distance of 61 km from Thiruvananthapuram. The enchanting bounty of nature can be witnessed here in the quiet surroundings. Situated at an altitude of over 100 m above sea level on the Western Ghats, the shimmering green waters of the winding streams and verdant woods of Ponmudi do not spare anybody.
The main attractions at Ponmudi are Orchids and Deer Park which is only just 3 km away from the Ponmudi resort.
As one enters to the boundaries of Ponmudi you get a clear picture of plantations in the region like rubber, pepper, cardamom and tea. The change is sudden that you will surely going to open your mouth with surprise. If you are lucky you will come across a lone elephant carrying his breakfast of coconut thatch in his trunk.
Trekking to the north of Ponmudi Crest, one passes along a mini zoo that house mainly monkeys, on the edge of the forest. Entering the forest, the verdant shades of green numb the senses. The brilliant red southern trongon dot the trees like flowers.
Other attractions near Ponmudi include Golden Valley and a number of rivulets and rapids, some even across the road. Located in a rich forest area, this whole place may attract for those who are interested in tropical vegetation. There is also a rich wildlife around these hills. Golden Valley is a sneak-peak offered to the beauty of the hills. It is an access-point to the river Kallar. Well-rounded pebbles, lush green trees, the cool water, fishes and the sheer wilderness of the park enthralls the visitor.
Another attraction in the region is Agastyarkoodam which is one of the highest peak in the Western Ghats and the highest peak in the district. This peak is famous for its wildness, and can be accessed only with permission from the Forest Department. The Meenmutty Water Falls is also a well-known attraction in the range.
Riding to Ponmudi itself a wonderful experience no one wants to miss. One will find oneself impulsively pausing every now and then to drink in deep the spectacular sweep of the hill ranges, tea-estates and the mist-covered valleys, peppered with little toy-like stone cottages painted a pretty violet, pink, or white with pointed and peaked roofs. Even driving through this region is wonderful and adventurous experience, but ensure a "safe drive".
