Manali, Himachal Pradesh
In Himachal Pradesh, Manali is situated 2050 m (6398 ft) high from sea level at the northern end of the kullu valley. It is a very famous tourism spot in India, after Kashmir. Manali stands for the reincarnation of life after a great flood, which devoured the whole earth and only the sage Manu, the Father of mankind, and the seven sages were rescued by a huge Fish, which is believed to be the Matsya avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Manali is the cradle for new life; it is situated in the Kullu valley, the valley of Gods, to the Western Himalayas. Manali is blessed with the most beautiful landscapes; snow capped Himalayan peaks; thick forests with beautiful birds, lush green valleys; field full of flowers, fast flowing rivers, lakes, hot water springs. It is a paradise for tourists and trekkers. Manali is the right place for para gliding, mountain skiing, fishing, sight seeing, golfing etc. Kullu valley spreads out on the either side of river Beas and Manali is a hill station offering a spectacular experience of the valley and the river.
It is said in ancient times the nomadic "rakshas" hunted in the Kullu valley. Shepherds settled in kullu and started agriculture and employed these rakshas to work in their fields. Actually, Britishers introduced apple and now it is the main crop of Manali and Himachal Pradesh.
It is advisable to travel through roadways or railways, as airways service is very poor in quality. One can reach Manali by taxi or buses from Delhi through NH-21 that passes through Leh. Luxury and Volvo buses ply from Delhi and other nearby places by HPTDC. By broad guage rail it is 570 km from Delhi, 315 km from Chandighar, 325 km from Pathonkot, 355 km from Ambala, 280 km from Shimla, and 310 km from Kalka. Joginder nagar is 135 km from Manali is a narrow guage railhead. Bhuntar has airport which is the nearest of all airports to Manali by only 50 km.
Usually the climate of manali will be cool and breezy and it is best for travelers to carry warm cloths.
The most important sight seeing spots at Manali are Naggar Fort, Dhungri or Hadimba Temple, Gompas or Buddhist monasteries, Manali Sanctuary, Solang Valley, and many picturesque spots in Manali.
Around Manali, tourists can visit Rohtang Pass, Keylong, Triloknath and Udeypur, Rahla Falls, Vashist Hot Water Springs and Temple.
In the Kullu valley one has to see Raghunathji temple, Vaishno Devi cave temple, Jagannath temple, Bijli Mahadev Temple, The Great Himalayan National Park, Kanavar Sanctuary.
